How to increase the number of posts on the front page of your WordPress blog

Here's an easy one (though judging by the number of Google searches that end up here, it's something lots of people are having problems with) -

  • sign into your WordPress admin panel
  • go to Settings > Reading
  • look for the box that says "Blog pages show at most"
  • change the number to the number you want

This setting normally (depending on how your theme's set up) affects your home page, category pages, date archive pages and search results pages.

Bear in mind this is a maximum: if you only have 5 posts in the "My Cat" category, only 5 posts can show on the "My Cat" category page, even if you tell WordPress you want 10 posts per page.

That is just the default setting.

Any page template you use that use the get post call function will use that default number whether you are using a dynamic or static page format in WordPress.

I think the real problem people are having is the ability to set their own numbers, for example, 3 posts on the blog page and 5 posts on the category page, or 6 excerpts on the archives page.

Thankfully there is a plugin that takes care of that but all in all, default is default that will make all functions in WordPress equal.

i83, there are plenty of people who don't even know how to change the default setting, and it is those people to whom this post is addressed.

And you don't need a plugin (if you were aiming to be helpful with your comment, I think you'd've said which one) to change the numbers on the archive etc. pages. One little theme edit is all it takes. Oh, I feel another post coming on... ;-)

Sue, then how do you do it????

For instance, I only want one post on my homepage! The most recent by time and date via my liking.

      Thanks for the help!

Can you tell me how to change the width of the left margin so that my Google ads will appear higher on the pages? Thank you.

Changing the width of your left margin isn't going to make your Google ads appear higher up the page. You could try swapping them over with that image of the feet on the scales.
