Twednesday : Instant Twitter for your blog (no plugin required)

We looked at plugins to link WordPress and Twitter before, but if all you want to do is add your Tweets to your blog's sidebar, there's an even easier way to do it: plug your Twitter account's RSS feed into an RSS widget, and you can have everything set up in about two clicks.

You'll find the RSS feed for your Twitter account linked from your own Twitter page in the the sidebar: it's marked with the standard orange icon.

  • Copy that URL;
  • go to Appearance > Widgets and choose an RSS widget
  • paste in your URL and give the widget a title - "On Twitter" or whatever makes you happy
  • the feed will display at least the tweets; if you want to show the Twitter user ID, check "Display item author if available?"

And that's it :-)

RSS feeds for Twitter searches

A useful trick if you want to collate everyone's tweets on a particular topic, is to use a Twitter search results' feed. You'll find the link to the feed from any Twitter search results page - again, in the sidebar; they take the form: http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=KEYWORD

http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=KEYWORD1%20KEYWORD2

I especially like this for rounding up comments on an event: WordCamp UK are doing it, and we will be for Start to Sell Online too.
