Help! My new blog is blank!

This is basic, but more than one person has had a little panic at me this week. Symptoms include:

  1. No categories show up.
  2. Where the posts should be is blank, or
  3. It says "Not Found Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here." or similiar where my blog should be.
  4. Other things like recent posts and comments are blank.

The newness of the blog is the clue here: WordPress can't display any posts if it doesn't have any posts to display, and categories don't normally show up unless they have posts ascribed to them. WordPress automatically installs one post and one comment: if you delete these before you've replaced them with your own content, you'll get "not found" messages.

Solution: stop panicking and create some content. Better still, leave the test post and comment in place until you've got a post or two of your own written.

If your blog isn't new and has many posts, and categories have posts ascribed to them, then this probably isn't the problem: check your database connection information is correct.
