Everyone seems to have asked this one this week, so here goes

The short answer is no, Twitter Tools will only send the automatic notifications of a new blog post to ONE Twitter account. And that's one Twitter account per WordPress install, not one Twitter account per blogger.

The easy way around that is to use Twitter Tools to automatically publish to one Twitter account, and something else to publish to another. I like Twitter Feed, which will publish not only to Twitter, but to Facebook as well, and has various bits of customisability, including whether you publish title and content or just title; post prefix ("New blog post: ") *and* post suffix, which can be useful for adding hashtags.

The neat thing about this set up is that you can publish two entirely different feeds. For example, with TameBay (which has multiple authors), I might want to publish *all* posts to @TameBay, but only the ones I've written myself to @blogmum. So for the latter, I'll use the author RSS feed rather than the "all posts" one.

And if you're publishing to more than two Twitter accounts, Twitter Feed will let you publish as many feeds to as many accounts as you like.

Shame, because they had some good ones, and auto-generating the "follow-me" code was useful. If you're now looking for a new way to link your Twitter account from your blog or website, here are some sources of lovely icons we've noticed:

Vincent Abry has 31 beautiful logos free for non-commercial use.

Josiah from Siah Design has animated and non-animated logos with white or transparent backgrounds. And he'll personalise them for just $10.

TwitButtons lets you input your Twitter ID and automatically generates the HTML code for you. This is an easy way to get your button, but if the site goes off-line (as Twitter Buttons did), you'll be left with no logo. So might be better to download the picture to your own server rather than linking theirs.

Hongkiat has 100 remarkably beautiful Twitter icons and buttons. Some really lovely and HUGE images there.

Limeshot has a follow-me button to suit just about everyone's style

Iconspedia has many lovely Twitter buttons, often part of icon sets. Terms of use vary, so do check.

Updated to add the good news that TwitterButtons is back!

We looked at plugins to link WordPress and Twitter before, but if all you want to do is add your Tweets to your blog's sidebar, there's an even easier way to do it: plug your Twitter account's RSS feed into an RSS widget, and you can have everything set up in about two clicks.

You'll find the RSS feed for your Twitter account linked from your own Twitter page in the the sidebar: it's marked with the standard orange icon.

Copy that URL;

go to Appearance > Widgets and choose an RSS widget

paste in your URL and give the widget a title - "On Twitter" or whatever makes you happy

the feed will display at least the tweets; if you want to show the Twitter user ID, check "Display item author if available?"

And that's it

RSS feeds for Twitter searches

A useful trick if you want to collate everyone's tweets on a particular topic, is to use a Twitter search results' feed. You'll find the link to the feed from any Twitter search results page - again, in the sidebar; they take the form:
http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=KEYWORD

http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=KEYWORD1%20KEYWORD2

I especially like this for rounding up comments on an event: WordCamp UK are doing it, and we will be for Start to Sell Online too.

Tools to hook up Twitter and WordPress - there are dozens of them, from tools to broadcast your blog posts to your Twitter followers, to - ah - tools to allow your blog readers to broadcast your blog posts to *their* Twitter followers. Here are a few of my favourite WordPress plugins for Twitter.

Twitter Tools

If you blog and Twitter, you need this. Twitter Tools can do a plethora of useful things, including:

showing your last x tweets in your blog's sidebar (where x is a number you choose)

tweeting when you blog* - you can have this on or off by default, and can override the default for any individual post

archiving all your tweets to one blog post daily or weekly

allowing you to tweet from your blog's sidebar or your WP dashboard

There are other tools that will let you do any one of these things, but as far as I know,Twitter Tools is the only one that will do all of them. It's a lovely bit of kit.

Changing Twitter Tools' default message

By default, Twitter Tools tweets "New blog post" + title + link. If you want to change this, go into Plugins > Edit, select Twitter Tools, and find the line:

$this->tweet_prefix = 'New blog post';

Change the words between the inverted commas to whatever you like: <s>if you don't want a prefix at all, then delete them but make sure both inverted commas are still there. </s> don't remove the text altogether because it's what the plugin uses to identify tweets it's created; if you remove the text and run twitter digest posts, you can end up with tweets going back and forth between Twitter and your blog forever!

Tweeting your RSS feed

If installing a plugin is too much like hard work, there are a number of services that will take your RSS feed and tweet it; the slight disadvantage of these is that they're less under your control than Twitter Tools would be. Twitterfeed is probably the best-known feed tweeter, though as of time of writing, they seem to be having a few problems. Pingvine is an alternative.

Easy link sharing

Tweet This adds a button to the bottom of your blog posts allowing your readers to easily post a link to their own Twitter streams. You might prefer Sociable or Share This as they allow posting to lots of other social media sites - Facebook, MySpace, StumbleUpon etc. etc. - as well as emailing the link to friends.

Add Twitter IDs to your comments

WP Twitip ID adds an extra text field to your comments form to allow your readers to add their Twitter IDs as well as their website links. You know your audience better than I do: if they're likely to have Twitter IDs, this is pretty cute, otherwise it's just another box to leave blank.

Tweetbacks : add tweets to your comments

If your readers are tweeting your posts, you might like to preserve those tweets as comments on the post itself. Joost's Tweetbacks plugin pulls Tweets referencing your post into your blog automatically. It does take a little setting up (you'll need to edit a couple of theme files) so make sure you read the implementation instructions.

If you tweet your blog posts, you might not want to include those tweets in your comments(!), so there's the option in the plugin settings to exclude your own ID or any other Twitter usernames you choose.

How are Twitter and WordPress interacting for you? If there's a plugin you love, leave us a comment.
